that vice president biden will spearhead his administration's response to the newtown shooting. the president is not expected to go into detail on policy decisions. the national rifle association has broken it's silence issuing a statement that reads in part this. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. that's significant. >> can i stop for a second there? if progressives, if moderates, if conservatives that are concerned about these magazine clips and assault weapons, if they want to feel self-righteous and scream and yell, they can do it and we won't get a deal. this is like the fiscal cliff. in the end it's like in "lincoln" with the 13th amendment. if the nra comes out and says something like that, instead of everybody going, now that blood's on your hands, you know what? guess what? feel self-righteous. you can save lives, or you can feel self-righteous. beat your chest like jim and tammy faye bakker if that's how you sleep at night. if that gets you through the night, go ahead. i tell you what, the art of politics,

. >>> in the wake of the newtown shooting which left 20 schoolchildren dead along with 6 adults national rifle association representatives hit the sunday talk shows to defend their call putting armed guards in every school is the best solution to prevent further tragedies. some school districts have handily rejected that idea, ours tell us they are going a big step further. >> reporter: in school districts across the country teachers, administrators and politicians are debating ways to keep classrooms safer. a police officer walks the halls in an elementary school in butler, pennsylvania, one of a growing list of school districts, including marlboro, new jersey, and orange county florida now hiring armed guards after the deadly newtown shoot >> we have armed officers in all 14 schools in the butler area school district, and we plan to have that on a daily basis from now on. >> reporter: but soon it may be more than just armed guards patrolling the nation's public schools. lawmakers in at least ten states have said they will consider laws allowing teachers and administrators to carry firearms.

and washington working together, negotiating on this bill and what happened in newtown. but in middle america, nothing happens in a bubble. people are still shattered by that. and anybody that is dragging their feet, fighting, seeming petty less than a week after -- i'm sorry, this is the worst tragedy i can think of as far as just shattering the soul of this country. i say since 9/11, in my lifetime. 9/11 and this. then i guess you'd have to go back to kennedy's assassination. i can't believe how shaken -- people are just talking about this all the time. they're looking at washington squabbling over numbers. and since they've already decided on the big issues, they're just thinking, they're so dysfunctional. and whoever gets the blame for this, it's in big trouble politically. >> no question. and it's not just on the fiscal stuff. it's on other things, too. i mean, you know, i thought your incredibly eloquent statement last week reflects what a lot of people feel including a lot of people who have had reservations before about doing something. that fight's just about to begin. the high water
